Balancing the Scales of Trade: Zambia China Relations in a dynamic global economy
The economic partnership between China and Zambia has grown significantly since China’s entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001. This paper explores the development of this bilateral relationship from its early stages in the 2000s, through the transformative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, and the global pivot toward clean energy transitions. Special attention is given to the implications of a potential deceleration in China’s economic growth on Zambia’s economy, with a focus on sectors that are heavily reliant on China’s foreign direct investment (FDI). The study concludes with recommendations for strategic adaptations that could strengthen the resilience of Zambia’s economy while fostering a more balanced and sustainable partnership with China.
